Why does debit not always work but then credit usually does when making purchases at Walmart?

I am a cashier at walmart and I constantly have the issue of my customers' debit cards not reading so I have to punch in the numbers and then for debit, sometimes the computer reads "alt tender required, debit denied" but then almost 98% of the time, I try credit and it goes through. I have had some customers hit their 'debit limit' but this is just plain denial. What's the difference between debit and credit on a debit card and why does it do this?|||Walmart pays the card company much more money to do a credit than a debit. Almost 3 times as much. You might want to tell your manager about this problem because it is costing the company money.|||Its how the cards themselves are set up. Example is Wells fargo, The card says debit, but they mostly go through as credit (even though its linked to their checking account). Also the issue is the card readers. The card readers are crappy, especially when they are really dirty. So then just hit credit and slide it on your keyboard reader. Those usually work. Another trick is to slide the card from the bottom up. With so much swiping, cards get worn on one side and don't read. To answer your last question, no in days, there isn't much differance between debit and credit, just how the card is set up.|||Maybe the customers are entering their PIN number incorrectly? The don't need a PIN to process as credit.
